Several brothers were profiled in the Summer 1998 edition of the Georgetown
Insider:
Rev. Samuel Lee Oliver has had his first book published. What
the Dying Teach Us: Lessons on Living. Sam is pastoral
counselor wit Hospice of St. Joseph County Inc. in Indiana. The
book was inspired by the patients and families Sam has worked
with through the Hospice program.
The book examines a spiritual approach to health care, teaching
the reader about values, hope and faith through actual
experiences of terminally ill people. It discusses learning from
the dying and encouraging the use of the beliefs and teachings of
deceased loved ones as a guide through the grieving process.
In addition to his position with Hospice of St. Joseph County,
Sam chairs the Indiana Hospice Ethics Committee and serves as the
state continuing education chair for the College of Chaplains. He
is a member of the editorial review board for Healing
Ministry Journal as well as a contributing writer. He is
also a board member of the American Journal of Hospice and
Palliative Care.
When Steve York was in high school, he attended a speech
tournament at Georgetown College. During a campus tour, he saw
that the college had a radio station. The station interested him
and his mind was made up about where to attend college.
After majoring in speech at Georgetown College, York spent three
years at WVLK-AM/FM in Lexington, his hometown, and September
1998 marks the completion of 20 years with WAVE-TV, the NBC
affiliate in Louisville. Starting as a reported, he was managing
editor for 13 years before taking the position of assistant news
director in January 1998.
Dan Miller is director of programming and station relations for
ABC affliate WHAS-TV in Louisville, Kentucky's largest market.
Dan, who has been with WHAS for 16 years, had previously worked
in market research, advertising and promotions.
WHAS conducts one of Louisville's major charitable campaigns,
Crusade for Children, and Dan oversees this activity. The
campaign, held for the past 45 years, raised $5.4 million this
year.
Dan, who was in Maskrafters and on the WRVG staff while at
Georgetown, said advice from Dr. Ralph Curry was particulary
helpful, "especially in his role as advisor to the Lambda
Chi Alpha fraternity, where I was a member."

Hey there, hi there, ho there,
Rev. W. Christopher Benham Skidmore here (a.k.a.
"Skiddy"). My new e-mail address is Skid1018@aol.com
{Well, at least until they establish a VirtualYaleStation address
for me}.
I received my Master of Divinity degree from Yale University on
May 25, 1998. I was married to Joy Benham (who also
graduated from Georgetown) on January 3, 1998. At that
time, I changed my name from Warren Christopher Skidmore to
Warren Christopher Benham Skidmore because I felt it was wrong
for one human spouse to be forced to change total identity while
the other did not, based soley on gender. In Kentucky both
she and I had to appear before the Judge, just to retain the
Benham name.
I was ordained into the Christian ministry by the Howard's Mill
(Southern) Baptist Church on August 25, 1997. I was able to
baptize a woman shortly after that just a few days before her
death, while I was serving as a chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital
in Lexington, KY.
I am now serving the Kentucky Council of Churches on a part-time
basis. My job includes the responsibility to bring more
denominations and churches into the Council, which acts to feed
the hungry, help the homeless, provide relief in state disasters,
lobby the legislature, discuss the oneness of the church and
denominational differences, aid rural Kentuckian farmers, and
fight racism.
Joy and I now live in Lexington, just between Man-O-War and New
Circle on Alumni Drive, in Mout Tabor Apartments. Joy is
working in the pharmacy of Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation
Hospital. Both of us are planning to attend the Dec. 4-6th
reunion in Opryland.

Brothers of Kappa
Omega...
We have had a busy month in the life of our
fraternity. On October 10, the brothers of Kappa Omega
spent Homecoming with around 50 to 55 alumni brothers. I
have a signed registry of the brothers who were present, but I am
confident that many brothers didn't get the chance to sign.
The 48 names of the brothers who signed the registry will be
posted on our web page soon. I felt like Homecoming was a
huge success. Thanks to all of you who were able to come.
An issue that was addressed at Homecoming
was the formation of an Alumni Advisory Board. I had a list
for you to sign if you were interested. At the end of the
day I was disappointed not to see any names on the list.
Our national headquarters requires that we form this alumni
organization. If you are remotely interested in becoming a
member, please email me and let me know. The
responsibilities of a board member are minimal. This board
would only require you to be able to offer advice to our
undergraduate officers.( via phone, email, and/or mail.)
The ideal members for this board are past Zeta officers.
Please consider becoming a chartering member of this. If
you have been looking for a way to become involved with Lambda
Chi Alpha once again, this is your chance.
Last weekend, Kappa Omega was very
busy. On Friday night we had a Halloween Party for a group
of middle school aged kids. The event included some
activities with the kids in the quad and concluded with a Haunted
House!!!!! I think that we had more fun than the
kids!!!!!! It was a great time!!!!! Events like this
also help us in rushing. We have a list of about 40 guys
who are interested in Lambda Chi Alpha, and formal rush hasn't
even begun.
Lastly, I am still trying to plan our 60th
Anniversary Celebration. It looks like Sat. Mar. 27, is
going to be a good day for this event. At that time our new
associates will be initiated, and it will be a great opportunity
for them to meet you. I am trying to put together a slide
show. If you have any pictures you would like to see
included, please send them to me at:
Lambda Chi Alpha
400 E. College St.
Box 703 Georgetown,
KY 40324
Attn: High Rho
I am looking forward to this event. This event will
hopefully be nicely catered. Along with this nice event
will come nice expenses. If you would like to contribute to
the Anniversary you can make a donation to the Purple, Green, and
Gold club. If you have any questions about this please let
me know. Until we meet again, I remain respectfully
yours....

Brothers of Kappa Omega,
When I last wrote I was
enjoying my summer break from classes, but now things are in full
swing once again. I was very pleased with the responses
that I received from you this summer, and I hope this
correspondence will continue. It is my goal that I will be
able to send out a mass emailing at the beginning of each
month. Please feel free to write in between my mass
emailings because I would love to hear from you.
Since my last letter some interesting things have happened in the
life of our fraternity. Our chapter seems to be pretty
fired up and excited about the upcoming year. I have been
thoroughly impressed with the enthusiasm our High Zeta has
shown. On Monday, Aug. 31, we were honored to have Kappa
Omega Alumnus, Bill Beams, Kappa Omega 384, in attendance at our
business meeting. On a sadder note, we recently suffered
the loss of another brother. Brother Paul Robinson, Kappa
Omega 270, of 504 Pawnee Trail, Frankfort, KY 40601, passed away
on Wed. Aug 26. I am sure that Brother Robinson's wife
would appreciate your words of sympathy.
Remember that Homecoming will be on Saturday, October 10 this
year. The house will be opening at 9:00 A.M. We hope
to see you there as we celebrate the success of the school and
the success of our fraternity. The fall newsletters were
mailed out at the beginning of the week, so you should be getting
them in the near future. Please let me know if you do not
receive a copy of one in the next week or two. I will
gladly send you one. I am looking forward to seeing you at
Homecoming. If you have any questions or concerns, please
contact me at any time.

Fellow Brothers of Kappa Omega,
I hope this finds you well. For some of you, this may be your
first email from me, and I want to thank you for allowin g me to
add you to my email distribution list. I hope that you will find
my messages to be interesting and enjoyable. Since my last
letter, many things have occured in the life of our fraternity.
In July we suffered the loss of brother Charles "Chic"
M ifflin, KO 393, of Georgetown, KY. If you wish to express your
sympathy to his family, you can contact his wife, Georgia, at 140
Copperfield Lane, Georgetown, KY 40324. I am sure she would
greatly appreciate a few kind words.
July was a month of discovering for me. Since becoming the new
High Rho in April, I have had numerous brothers ask me about
renaming our chapter house in honor of Dr. Ralph Curry. Each time
I was approached I had the same answer for them, "I don't
know much about that. " Well, now I know quite a bit about
the Ralph Curry Memorial Fund. I spoke with a gentleman here at
the college about renaming our house. If you have questions
regarding the Ralph Curry Memorial Fund, you can email me and I
will explain it to you.
This summer I have been keeping in close contact with Mark
Lenahan. Mark maintains our chapter web page, and has done an
excellent job. Thanks, Mark for devoting so much of your time to
ensure that our alumni are kept up-to-date on the happenings of
our chapter. If you haven't viewed our web site it is located at http://home.earthlink.net/~lenahan1.
I urge you to visit this site. It contains useful information
about Kappa Omega's Reunion and Homecoming 1998. An updated
itinerary of Home coming's events will soon be posted on our web
page.
The fall newsletter will be complete in about three weeks when I
receive letters from our officers. Hopefully I will be able to
mail them out before September. If not, they will be mailed t he
first week of September. I am very excited about the
opportunities we will have in the 1998-99 school year to improve
our alumni programming. I recently spoke with our High Alpha,
Matt McCollough, about ideas to improve our alumni relations. He
made a suggestion that we begin a Mentorship Program, which I am
in favor of. Earlier this summer I wrote about beginning an
Alumni Advisory Board. An Alumni Advisory Board is a group of
about 5-10 alumni who are willing to give their time to offer
helpful a device by guiding us to make wise decisions pertaining
to chapter operations. A Mentorship Program would allow us, as
active members, to speak with alumni who have careers that
interest us. The members of our Alumni Advisory Board would be
very helpful in allowing us to find our "mentors". I
think that both an Alumni Advisory Board and a Mentorship Program
would allow us to strengthen our ties with you. In one of my
previous letters I asked you to begin thinking of things you
would like to see occur at Kappa Omega's 60th Anniversary that I
am trying to plan for the Spring of 1999. I am looking for ideas
from brothers that represent each decade of our brotherhood. The
success of this event greatly depends on your ideas. I want
everyone to play a part in planning this special event. If you
are interested in becoming a member of our Alumni Advisory Board,
and/or you have ideas for the 60th Anniversary, please contact me
by email or mail me at:
Georgetown College #566

I expect our chapter to grow and thrive this year in many ways.
The 1998-99 High Zeta will be meeting August 21,1998 to discuss
our plans for the 1998-99 school year. Each officer has been
working extremely hard all summer planning events that will
contribute to the overall success of our chapter.. It is my hope
that we will be able to share the success with you at Homecoming
that we expect the 1998-99 school year will bring. Be looking for
your newsletter around the first of September, and I hope to hear
from you soon.

Fellow Brothers of Kappa Omega,
It has been a little over a month since my last emailing, and a
lot has happened that concerns you, as alumni. We have had a
death in our brotherhood. Brother K Ronald Smith KO 286 passed

Earlier this month I was invited to attend a planning meeting in
Bardstown for the alumni reunion that will be held the first
weekend in December at the Opryland Hotel. There is a group of
men who are working very hard to ensure that you will have a
great time at the reunion. The men in attendance at the planning
meeting were: Phil Arnold KO 383, Bill Beam KO 384, Jack Walker
KO 396, Harold Wagner KO 430, John Feiock KO 495, Ted Gibson KO
466, Bob McFarland KO 426, Barry Pollock KO 427, Dudley Glass KO
467, and Ron Gray KO 468. The men discussed the plans of the
weekend with me, and I can assure you it will be a marvelous
time. If you haven't already made plans to attend, please do so.
If you need information about this, reply back to me or email
Bill Beam at billbeam@aol.com. All of this information will be
provided in a more specific manner in the fall newsletter.
Be looking for the newsletter earlier than usual
this year. I have discovered that many alumni do not receive
information about homecoming until it's too late. I have been
working on the newsletter this summer, and it is nearing
completion. When school starts in August I will obtain letters
from the High Alpha, Beta, and Pi. These letters will be included
in the newsletter, and then the newsletter will be sent out as
soon as possible. I have written about five articles that are
strickly alumni related. If you have anything you would like to
see incorporated in the newsletter, please send me the
information as soon as possible.
Homecoming events are still being planned as of this minute. As
soon as I receive a rough outline of the school's scheduled
events I will be able to give you specific times that our chapter
will be meeting. Homecoming is October 10 this year. If you
haven't been on campus in a while, there are plenty of new things
to see. In the past three years we have added a new Fine Arts
building and an impressive new athletic complex. This year many
alumni will see our new Learning Resource Center. Many exciting
things are happening at Georgetown College. I hope to see you at
homecoming this year.
The 60th Anniversary is still being planned for next Spring.
Hopefully this will be a large event. Any ideas or suggestions
you might have for this event will be greatly appreciated.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few brothers for
their kind emails: Dr. Peter LaRue, Mark Lenahan, Harold Wagner,
Bill Beam, Eric Powers, Kevin Joiner, Jim Rogers, Bill Chesnut,
David Stone, Phil Pike, and Dr. Albert Joslin. Your words of
encouragement have really meant a lot to me.
I have just completed a database that includes all Kappa Omega
alumni addresses that the school had as of September 1997. If you
have moved since September of 1997, please let me know what your
new address is so I can better serve you. There are only 713
addresses that the school has on file. If there is a question in
your mind that I may not have your address or any other addresses
of brothers near you, do not hesitate to let me know. If I can
assist you in any way, feel free to contact me.

Fellow Brothers of Kappa Omega,
I am your new High Rho, Kevin Brown. As I considered taking this
office I was informed that Kappa Omega's interaction with our
alumni has been well below par in the past. This disturbing
information made me want to serve as High Rho even more. It is my
goal that, through my efforts, I may increase
undergraduate/alumni interaction. I also plan on transforming the
office of High Rho into something that future Zeta officer
aspirants will see as challenging and worthwhile.
In case some of you haven't seen Kappa Omega's web page lately,
we have had a very successful year. As a chapter we have been
very involved in philanthropic events this year. Among our
philanthropies we have added a 5K race for cancer. The race
debuted this spring and was quite a success and will become a new
Lambda Chi event that will hopefully occur twice a year. We are
in the running to win another Grand High Alpha award this year.
Also, a new annual campus event that debuted this year was the
Greek Awards Banquet. As a newly initiated brother, I sat through
the awards banquet and was overcome with pride for Kappa Omega.
The active brothers of Kappa Omega hope this success continues,
as I am sure you do also.
A couple of weeks ago the Zeta officers met and planned many
events for the fall semester. Among these events are some
opportunities for you to become involved. You are all aware of
how you can become involved by attending homecoming in October,
but I think that we need to correspond more than once or twice a
year. I have planned what I call, "Honorary Mondays."
The first Honorary Monday will occur on September 14. The purpose
of Honorary Mondays is to get our honoraries and local alumni
more involved on a regular basis. We will be cordially inviting
our Honoraries to attend our chapter meeting on Monday night,
September 14. Hopefully, this will start a trend. With involved
honoraries, we, as a chapter, will be able to aquire some helpful
ideas on how meet the needs of our alumni.
Another way I hope to gain some interaction with you is through
emails. Throughout the year I hope to send personal emails to as
many of you as possible in an effort to see what's happening your
lives. The big event that I am trying to plan for the Spring of
1999 is Kappa Omega's 60th anniversary. The Spring of 1999 will
mark 60 years since our Kentucky Alpha chapter of Theta Kappa Nu
merged will Lambda Chi Alpha. I need help in planning this event.
I need ideas from brothers
from each decade of things we can do to make this a success. If
this goes well, we may have guests from nationals here. I think
that this anniversary would be a great way to celebrate our
success that each brother has contributed to.
I hope to hear from you soon with ideas on how improve the
operations of Kappa Omega and how to make our 60th anniversary a
success. If I can assist you in any way, feel free to call me
this summer at (502) 863-8624 or during the school year at (502)

Just got a note from Chris Farley who wanted to pass it on to the
brothers:
I ahve finally entered the 90's and gotten on-line. Just wanted
to type a quick message to my brothers and let them know I'm
alive and doing well. I'm working hard in the first year of my
Family Practice residency at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton,
Ohio. I'm also the proud father of Devin Nelson Farley, born
12/27/97.
Hope things are going well at the chapter house and look forward
to keeping closer contact through the wonders of technology.

Here's an e-mail we just got from Kent Smith:
It is good to see the chapter on line. My son is in his third
year at Purdue in the Pikes, so it has been real nostaglic to
think about my time at Georgetown. Of coursee everything at
Georgetown always revolved around the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity
as I'm sure it still does. It would be great to hear from some of
the brothers of that era.

Got a great e-mail from Barry Birdwhistell:
Gentlemen of Lambda Chi Alpha:
I had an opportunity to return to Georgetown this weekend for
Homecoming. It was the first time in several years that I had
been there. My family and I were able to be present for the
Songfest and made the first part of the meeting at the House on
Saturday morning. To say that I was impressed would be an
understatement. Let me congratulate you on your outstanding
performance on Friday night and a nicely organized meeting on
Saturday morning. I graduated in 1977 and had been familiar with
Lambda Chi's at Georgetown since 1969 through family members. I
can honestly say that the fraternity appears to be in great hands
with you, the current members. I enjoy your newsletters and now
that I have have found your homepage, I will try to to remain
more in touch with the actives.
Again, thanks for a good homecoming.

p.s. Kudos to the piano player and other performers for the song,
"Imagine". It truly was moving.
