From the June 2004 Cross & Crescent:

It was with great pleasure that the Phi-Kappa Zeta Alumni Association announces the creation of a scholarship fun in honor of Dr. Bill Nowell, Georgetown ’63. Our alumni association has created this scholarship fund to recognize the accomplishments of Dr. Nowell and the long-term dedication he has shown to the Auburn-Montgomery community, including the grateful fraternity. The alumni association plans to award two scholarships from this fund. The first during the fall semester to a newly admitted freshman student; the second to be awarded in the spring semester to a deserving chapter member.

Congratulations Bill!

Brothers,
My name is Joshua Shoulta and I am currently a junior at Georgetown College and recruitment chair for Lambda Chi Alpha. Every year the Lambda Chi's throw a back to school party with an Hawaiian theme. It is a very large annual event and it is great rush tool. We give out leis at the door and we are anticipating a large crowd this year. To cut back on costs, I would like to ask for your assistance by purchasing one or more boxes of leis. Each box is $9.99 at a local party supply store and we are guessing that we will need at least 8 boxes. If you would be interested in donating to this, please contact me at cooljosh@email.com or you can call me at (502)-396-9391.

Thanks for all of your help.

In ZAX,
Joshua Shoulta

Brothers,

On September 26 I will be competing in an Olympic distance triathlon as a member of Team in Training, an organization that provides funding for medical research to help treat and cure blood cancers including leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Along with my TNT teammates, I am supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and I hope you will consider supporting my fund-raising for this cause.  If you would like to donate, please drop me an e-mail at youngwvny@hotmail.com

Thanks for any support you can provide.

Best,
Matt Young

We are planning an alumni reunion this fall.  Here is the information we have so far.

According to Bob and Ted, Sept. 24&25th would be the best for followers of UK or UL football.  We need to have a meeting in Bardstown on June 10th to go over some ideas to help fund our depleted treasury. Please contact the group and schedule that date.  Green Turtle Bay has agreed to provide us with a meeting room. There will be a good band Friday night and a great band Sat. night.  Their web site is www.greenturtlebay.com.

The rates are as follows:
1 Bedroom condo $145 per night
2 Bedroom condo $250 per night
3 Bedroom condo $340 per night
4 Bedroom condo $450 per night
The reunion committee will receive a 10% rebate.
All condos have separate and private baths.

Brothers need to Contact Jennifer at (800) 498-0428 and say they are with the Wagner party. If brothers are willing to share a condo we can have up to forty couples.
Brothers need to decide if they want to save on the multi rooms condo or need a private condo. Brothers that are comfortable sharing with certain other Brothers but not others should get their group together and tell Jennifer who they are sharing a condo with.

Green Turtle Bay is in a dry area so the brothers will have to bring their own. If a brother is flying in to Paducah I will get their alcoholic for them. If a drink needs to be mixed there will be a small set-up charge that includes the non-alcoholic mix.

Bill please use your e-mail list to get this out as soon as possible. I will need to know about how many to reserve a section in the restaurant for both nights.

Any Questions ?? My e-mail address is hlwagner@bellsouth.net

Thanks for the information on the book, Goat.  Please know that His Way Ministries will be honored to help anyway we can.  I think one of the best ways to discredit any hazing charges or beliefs against Lambda Chi Alpha will stem from every brother's own personal experience during our time in college.  I still hold my experience as a Lambda Chi Alpha brother as the highlight of my college days.

Brothers,

I just finished a new book by Brad Land entitled, Goat.  It's a true account of his experience as a fraternity pledge at Clemson University.  Brutally graphic in his description of the hazing he experienced, including the death of one of his pledge brothers, I believe that Goat is going to have an impact on the way fraternities are viewed.

While I encourage each of you to read it, it's more important that we support the active chapter during this time.  We need to focus our recruiting efforts on the positive aspects of Lambda Chi Alpha - our Christian values, our no hazing policy, etc.  I encourage you to reach out to the active chapter and provide them with ideas to re-enforce the positives of the Greek system.    If you know high school students in your area that are preparing for college, take a few minutes to sit down with them (and their parents) to answer any questions they may have about fraternities.

The Greek system is in no way perfect and the fact that there are fraternities out there that still abuse their pledges in the name of brotherhood are challenges we will always have to face.  Lambda Chi Alpha was the first to introduce a no hazing policy because we recognized that hazing does nothing to strengthen the bond of brotherhood.  True brotherhood comes from respect, love and honesty.  Let's make sure every Freshman at Georgetown College knows that.

Hello Brother Lambs,

Your new Alumni Association is sponsoring a get together Saturday, May 22 at the Lexington Legends baseball game. A few guys have done this in the past and say it is a real hoot. We have 50 seats reserved in front of the Budweiser Stables, just down the first base line. From the name of it, you can tell the beer is cold and tasty.

It's a stag affair; so let your inhibitions run wild. We start the eating at 5:30, or 1 1/2 hours before game time. The menu is great. Lots of ball park food.

We are trying to re-vitalize the Alumni Association with several events planned for this year. We would like your help with these. Especially in the field of communications. The Chapter Directory needs to be updated and maybe you can help. Call a brother and bring him with you. Call your big brother and treat him to an exciting day. If you know the where-abouts of a lost brother, bring his information so we can correct his address, especially email addresses.

The cost is $24 per person, which includes seats, picnic meal and drinks (tea, lemonade). You can send a check, made to "Lambda Chi Alpha", to me at:

Bill Beams
2320 Jessamine Station Road
Wilmore, Ky 40390

Call me at 859-858-3168 if you have any questions.  Hurry because the young guys are scarfing up the tickets. We need senior power!  I am excited about seeing you.

IN ZAX,
Bill
