Alumni News - 2002

Updated 12/30/2002

Dear Current & Alumni Brothers of Kappa-Omega Zeta,

I hope that you each had a most wondrous and blessed Christmas and are looking forward to a New Year which shall bring you great joy, great satisfaction and great fulfillment.

These times represent great challenge and great opportunity for our Kappa-Omega Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha at Georgetown College. The Gents of the Curry House continue to "set the pace" for all fraternal organizations on campus - for which we are grateful - but we also are confronted with the ongoing challenge of malaise which oft-times "creeps into" the Brotherhood during the Fall Semester. Please know, however, that our High Alpha, Jeremy, and the entire K-O Leadership Team and I are committed to doing everything in our power to bring the level of Passion for and Pride in Lambda Chi Alpha to new heights.

Change and uncertainty seem to be the watch-words of today. We are currently "in search" for a new, permanent Dean of Students for the campus [and fortunately I am on the search committee] and we have narrowed the list down to four "finalists" - all of whom I am glad to say - have a very strong background in Greek Affairs and are committed to student success. The economic challenges of the times and the College are well-known - and to be reckoned with - as all affects directly or indirectly the well-being of Kappa-Omega. The uncertainties of the global situation keeps us all a bit on edge - and adds a bit to the general angst of the times. These and other reasons have greatly reduced the "pool" of young gents who have registered to go through Rush this semester - which is going to make recruiting a real challenge - for not just Kappa-Omega, but all Greek organizations on campus.

As I oft-times say, however, challenge also brings opportunity and I see and sense continuing great times for Lambda Chi Alpha at Georgetown College. Mr. Mattingly [our High Kappa] has planned a wonderful Winter Retreat for the Brotherhood which shall take place on January 11-12. Preceding this, our High Alpha will be holding extended meetings of EC and all Zeta Officers as we plan and prepare for the challenges of the Spring. On January 19-21 we shall host an ELC [Educational Leadership Consultant] from Lambda Chi Internationals who shall help us infuse energy and excitement into the Brotherhood as we "come down the stretch" on this year's recruiting. Mr. Dermitt [our High Delta] has planned what will be very successful Informal and Formal Rush Parties and our High Phi, Mr. Keller, is working diligently to ensure we have a very meaningful and successful Ritual experience [and I know our High Rho, Roy Lowdenback, shall keep you well-apprised of coming events].

We are extremely excited that Dr. Michael Cairo of the Political Science department has joined us as the current Academic Advisor for Kappa-Omega. Additionally, we want to extend congratulations to Roy Lowdenback for having recently been elected as President of the Georgetown College student body for the coming year. Many of our current Brothers continue to distinguish themselves with acceptances into major institutions for continuing their education, as well as other recognitions, accolades and awards - as they hold-high the standards of excellence for which Kappa-Omega is well-known.

On a personal note, on January 1st, 2003 - I shall begin my fourth, two-year term as High Pi & Chancellor of Kappa-Omega - a privilege and a pleasure that I cherish greatly. As I begin my new term, I ask for your continuing support, assistance and prayers as I lend what aid I can to the Brothers and the Brotherhood.

Yes, we have many challenges before us - and be you far or be you near; an Alumni Brother of yesteryear or a current Brother of today - we need your support, encouragement and help as we work to ensure that the Brotherhood of Kappa-Omega not only remains strong - but increases, augments and flourishes - for not just the coming year - but the foreseeable future. Thank-you, Happy New Year and Be Well.

Love shall our token; Love be yours and Love be mine.
Love to God and all men; Love for plea and gift and sign.
(words of Christina Rossetti)

Most Warmly,
Dr. Pete

I just thought I wanted to find a way to let the men of KOZ know about my former husband's (Phil Miller) death.   Your records may show who Phil's big brother was, I just can't remember, but I DO know that Carvel Baker was his little brother.  So many names come to mind...H.B. Marcum, Phil Pike, the Smith brothers (twins), Harry Walkenhorst *(they got into much trouble together), all those nice guys. I haven't seen or heard of any for years but the memories remain strong. I was on campus two years ago when I spoke to the Georgetonian Staff and the Journalism classes -- I'm a writer for The Washington Times here in the DC area -- and saw so many of the folks then that I remember, at least in picture and story.  Phil and I were married in 1959, and Prof. Curry was our best man.  I am sure Phil may not have been the most frequent visitor to the campus or the house, but there is no question but that he loved Lambda Chi.

Thanks much,
Martha Miller Boltz

The college has decided to demolish the "original" LCA house on Military St. sometime in the next year. This is the house where the QT Club, Gamma Tau Alpha, Theta Kappa Nu and Lambda Chi were housed most of the time from 1924 until the beginning of WW2 (about 1942). This is NOT the "old" house on main street, where alums from the late 40's to early 70's lived!   I've contacted the current High Rho and Alumni president about maybe getting a picture made in front during Homecoming.... possibly even with some pre-WW2 brothers if we can get them here!

Phil Miller, of Louisville Kentucky and Georgetown 1956 passed away Saturday.  Visitation is this evening in Louisville and funeral will be in Virginia.  Phil was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Georgetown chapter.  If memory serves me correctly his zata number was Kappa Omega 271.  He was a regular at homecoming until his health prevented his attendance.

Greetings from Louisville, Kentucky! Suzanne, Aubrey, and I have recently moved from Dayton, Ohio to Louisville where I started a new job after completing residency. Aubrey is 17 months old now and growing up fast. We are currently living in an apartment until our house is completed. Suzanne is staying at home with Aubrey for now which is quite a task in itself. I am also changing my e-mail address to this yahoo account - bnwynn@yahoo.com. If you have time, send us an e-mail and let us know how things are going in your lives. Or better yet, stop by and see us in Louisville or call sometime.

We have just learned that our Kappa-Omega Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha at Georgetown College received its fourth consecutive Grand High Alpha Award. The award was presented last evening at the 49th Bi-Annual General Assembly and Leadership Seminar of the Lambda Chi Alpha International Fraternity in Denver, Colorado. The Grand High Alpha award is the highest recognition which a chapter may receive from the general fraternity. A chapter is eligible for consideration - only every three years - and this is the fourth consecutive time which the gents of our Kappa-Omega Zeta have been so honored. It is our understanding - that this is only the 15th time - in the long history of Lambda Chi Alpha - that a chapter has received the Grand High Alpha Award - four consecutive times. As the GHA award is cumulative in nature - over the three year period of time - on behalf of our current High Alpha, Jeremy Sexton, our 2002-2003 Leadership Team, and the active Brothers of Kappa-Omega - we would like to thank all of our Alumni Brothers, the Administration at Georgetown College - and particularly the leadership of past-presidents Alan Redditt [1999-2000], Kevin Brown [2000-2001] and Michael Birchett [2001-2002] - and their High Zetas - for the extraordinary commitment, excellence and focus which they have provided for our Brotherhood. Additionally at the General Assembly our Georgetown Chapter received First Place Awards for Academic Excellence and Campus Involvement. David Dunaway and Roy Lowdenback served as the official Georgetown Delegates to the conference - and they were both honored with academic scholarships.

Brothers,

Ruth and I are delighted that we shall return to Russia on July 1.  We will teach again at the Russian-American Christian University and the Moscow Baptist Seminary for two years.    Obviously we want to do this because it would be much more comfortable and convenient to remain in the USA than to live in Moscow.    Our church has enough missions ministries to fill four or five lifetimes,  but we have thousands of people in Knoxville who can work with Habitat for Humanity,  Appalachian Outreach, visiting the sick and homebound,  counseling young people,  etc.   But God has blessed us with unique skills and experiences to work in Russia, and we feel that this is what we ought to do.   The needs are so great.

We always look forward to seeing everyone at Homecoming, but we'll have to wait until October 2004.

Yours in ZAX,
Jim Heizer

Nicholas Alexander Benham Skidmore was born in Lexington, Kentucky on March 4, 2002 at 11:24am to parents Amanda Joy Benham Skidmore and Warren Christopher Benham Skidmore.  At birth Nicholas weighed seven pounds and twelve ounces and was 20.25 inches tall.  Joy is the youngest child in her family and Chris is an only child, neither of us have worked very much in the nursery or as baby-sitters-- so Nicholas is giving us a crash course in Child Care 101.  We selected the name "Nicholas" because we were told it meant "victory of the people" and chose "Alexander" because we were led to believe that it carried a connotative meaning of "servant of humanity."  We wish to convey our heartfelt appreciation for all of the support and encouragement that you have given to us, and would like to share a few pictures of Nicholas Alexander.  Nicholas is currently at home but has to return again to the doctor to see if he will need to be hospitalized for his jaundice; he now weighs seven pounds and one ounce.

Love,
Joy, Chris, and Nicholas Skidmore

I would like to mention an opportunity for the brothers.  I am active in the Emmaus community in Campbellsville which is a three-day experience designed to make Christians stronger and more dedicated to their faith.  We are offering a Young Adult Chrysalis (YAC), which is an Emmaus Walk aimed at college men and women, on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia on Memorial Day week-end (Saturday through Monday).
I would like to encourage brothers, girfriends and any other interested young adults to experience the YAC.  It is a great week-end of Christian growth and fellowship and for many, it is a life-changing experience.  If anyone wants details, please e-mail or call me at:  David A. Nunery,  105 E. Main St., Campbellsville, KY.  42718, phone (270)789-2466, dnunery@earthlink.net.

Hello and greetings in ZAX to all of my old and new brothers at KOZ.

This is Tony Carney (KOZ 991). I graduated from GC in 1992. I would assume that many/most of you don't know me personally, but just ask Lenahan about me. If he's not too old and if the Alzheimer's hasn't set in too far, he should have plenty of stories about me to tell you. (And if that doesn't work, then go to Donna, because she and I had a fling behind Mark's back.........JUST KIDDING MARK!! Ha ha)

I activated the same year we hit 1000. Wow! That seems like ages ago, yet it feels just like yesterday. I'll never forget Chapel Day of Spring 1990. Steve Wininger and I were best friends and had decided to rush together. We painted our faces purple and gold and ran out of the chapel together. What a great memory!! It's hard to believe that he's now married with a child, and has his PhD. Time flies, guys!

The same year I activated, I was High Delta, and we had the largest rush class on campus (and in KOZ history for many many years before that!) That was the beginning of our "upswing". Now that I've spent time looking through the website and receiving the annual Fall Newsletter, I feel as if you guys have just gotten better and better each year! After graduation in 1992, I moved to Bangkok, Thailand where I had served as a summer missionary the year before (between my junior and senior years). And, with the exception of 1994-5 when I served as the Associate Campus Minister at GC, I've been here in Thailand most of the last 9 years.

When I first arrived here, I put my chemistry & language studies degree to use. I worked for a French oil company as the Assistant Country Manager. I daily thanked Drs. Wiseman & Blackburn for all of the chemical background they'd given to me.

But, as fate would have it, in 1998 I was "spotted" by a talent scout in a modelling agency. Being a blue eyed, white guy in an Asian country who can speak fluent Thai is definitely a rare thing here. So, before I knew it, I had resigned my job at the oil company and was acting full time. And as these last 3 years have passed, I've become what you would call "famous" (although I still feel strange saying that about myself).

Currently, I'm acting in 3 different TV series, filming in a feature movie to be released in theaters in April 2002, and hosting my own show called DISCOVER THAILAND. It's a travel show a lot like LONELY PLANET on the Discovery Channel and is broadcast to 158 countries around the globe.

So, needless to say, I've kept quite busy. I love my job and I love living here in Thailand. Losing my privacy and always being looked at when I go out are probably the only negative things about my job.

As well as working in "showbiz", I'm active in my church. I've been a member of The Evangelical Church of Bangkok for the last 5 years. I help out a lot with creative ministries, and a couple of other Christian TV stars that I'm friends with also go to my church. We are always looking for opportunities to share our faith to the public via our "celebrity status". For example, this Christmas, we (along with several other actors) performed a stage play at the National Cultural Center of Thailand. It was open to the public and we had sell out crowds for all 6 performances. The play was called "The Power of Love" and centered around the gift of a second chance that Christ gives to us.

Anyway, I suppose that about sums up the majority of my life since I left G-Town. I try to make it back to the states and to Kentucky at least once a year to visit my family. The next time I'm back, I'm going to make a solid effort to take a road trip back to G-Town to visit. I look forward to meeting you current brothers, and reminiscing about the "good old days". In the meantime, feel free to email me anytime. I would love to be kept up on your achievements (many as they are). And if you have any information regarding the brothers of my "era" that you think I might be interested in hearing, please contact me.

My address here is:
