Alumni News - 2001

Updated 12/24/2001

Dear Brothers,

At this time last year, I am certain neither of us could have ever conjured the horror and aftermath of September 11, 2001...

Did you know the Lambda Chi Alpha family lost eight brothers to the attacks?

We mourn and honor these lost brothers, but give thanks for the thirty brothers who survived the attacks. You can find all their stories on our web site at www.lambdachi.org/tragedy.asp

And while nothing compares to the blessing of those brothers surviving the attacks, we do have a number of other blessings for which to be grateful.

This fall we established new colonies at University of Iowa, Cal State Northridge, University of California Davis, and Marietta College. Final planning of four spring colonization's will be complete in two weeks.

The Fraternity just completed its largest, most comprehensive strategic planning retreat ever, with input from thousands...including alumni, students, parents, and university presidents.

Seventy-five Lambda Chis returned to campuses this fall with academic scholarships from our Foundation. Hundreds more will receive leadership training this February at six Regional Leadership Conferences.

The first weekend in November, thousands of undergraduates raised millions of pounds of much needed food for their communities in Lambda Chi Alpha's North American Food Drive.

Again we are enjoying a strong increase in new members. Hundreds of young men will be going back home for the first time at Christmas full of the gifts of Fraternity...a campus home, new lifelong friendships, and the confidence that comes with belonging to a 92-year-old brotherhood of more than 240,000 men.

Finally, we give thanks for you. We stride confidently forward, knowing you are by our side. We give thanks for your support and fellowship, and wish you a peaceful holiday season.

Sincerely yours in ZAX,

Thomas A. Helmbock
Executive Vice President

Dear Valued & Cherished Alumni Brothers of Kappa-Omega,

I hope that this finds you well, and I most-assuredly hope that you and yours have a most wonderful and blessed holiday season. Although in the past, I have tried to use our LCA Alumni-Email Distribution List to contact you - this has proven to be slightly unsatisfactory - as it is always changing, oft-times has many inconsistencies/inaccuracies and does not reach many of you. To this end, I am asking Mr. Lenahan to post this holiday greeting on his fabulous KOZLCA web - and hope that at some juncture you are able to peruse my ever-rambling thoughts.

At the outset, I would like to give a quick synopsis of the extraordinarily fine work of the active Brothers this fall. They continue to distinguish themselves and Kappa-Omega in numerous ways - and their efforts this semester have included, but are not limited to.....

Creation/Presentation of the new William A. Beams Leadership/Service Scholarship
Watermelon Bust Philanthropic Project
North America Food Drive Philanthropic Project [exceeded last year's total by over 4000 pounds]
Homecoming 2001 Events including the Festival of Song, Alumni Reception, Barbecue
Operation Torch - Philanthropic Project
Great Hawaiian, Informational and other sanctioned "House Parties"
Fine Efforts for/towards ensuring a very successful Associate Class
Date Auction - Philanthropic Project
Completion of the new Alumni Directory
New Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day
Great and Ongoing Weekly Devos
A superb visit with the ELC from "HQ" utilizing the new "strategic planning" rubric
Creation/Implementation of the new "Standards Board"

Yes, Michael, the entire K-O Leadership Team and all of the Brothers have been very busy, and my personal pride in them remains boundless.

Again, I wish you all the very best during this coming holiday season. Please remember, as I have said many times previously, although many miles and/or years might separate us - Kappa-Omega works very hard to remain a focal point of pride for our Active Brothers, our International Fraternity, Greek Life at Georgetown College and You, our cherished and valued Alumni Brothers.

I would like to close with the great words of Christina Rossetti.....

Love came down at Christmas, Love all lovely, Love divine;
Love was born at Christmas, stars and angels gave the sign.

Worship we the Godhead, Love incarnate, Love divine;
Worship we our Jesus, but wherewith for sacred sign?

Love shall be our token, love be yours and love be mine;
Love to God and all men, love for plea and gift and sign

Most Warmly,
Pete LaRue

Just thought I would send you a line so you could add me to the members listing on the webpage. The site looks great and the flash intro is very well done. Went to Georgetown's game with Campbellsville this Thanksgiving weekend and took a notion to re-familiarize myself with the alma mater via the web. It's been about 20 years now, but I never took much satisfaction in looking back before.

Just to give you the shorthand version, after graduate school at UK, I went to work as a newspaper reporter in my hometown: Harlan, KY. After five years there I was recruited to join the Appalachian Regional Healthcare system and work in public relations at their Harlan facility, which is where I remain. My wife, Eva, and I have been married 14 years this coming March. We have three children: daughter Courtney is 11, son Jeremy is 9, and son John is 4.

Don't go through Georgetown any more. Have passed by a few times. The campus looks in good shape and the new library is most impressive (at least from the outside!) but it's just not the same without Ralph Curry striding broadly across its paved walks with his hat precariously tilted on his head and his cane dashing back and forth like a conductor's baton. Change doesn't necessarily equal loss, but it often seems so.

May God bless and my best always to you.

Sincerely,
Mark Bell, KOZ875

Dearest Alumni & Active Brothers of the Kappa-Omega Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha at Georgetown College,

What a Grrr...Great Homecoming 2001 it was at Georgetown College. As I said in my brief, rambling remarks at the Curry House yesterday morning, I was humbled by the extraordinary turnout of you Alumni Brothers - who made sacrifices to be with us on this special day, and I am beholden to each of you for the great and proud legacy of Kappa-Omega with which you have entrusted the Active Brothers and I.

For those of you Alumni Brothers - who were unable to attend - please know - we felt and sensed your presence although perhaps many miles separated us. We were blessed with the most amazingly fine weather, an unusually large turnout of Alumni and also the very special presence - of a very special lady, "Ma Ewing" - as we celebrated the past and present of our Kappa-Omega Zeta.

These are great days for Lambda Chi Alpha at Georgetown College as we remain the very focal point of excellence for the fraternal system. We need to not mention our 4.0 gents, the outstanding philanthropic work for which the Brothers are well-known, the deep commitment to God and Country for which Kappa-Omega has always been an exemplar - these are a given - but a given that needs constant care and vigilance. Many across campus, and perhaps even many of you - know that the success of fraternal organizations tends to be cyclic - and are waiting for Kappa-Omega to diminish. Please know, and I say this with some great degree of certitude, that if there was a "downward trend" it was about two years ago - when perhaps we became a bit complacent - a bit lethargic - perhaps enjoyed too much "success" at the expense of the very "spirit" of the Cross and Crescent. Was it obvious then - not so much - but during the past two years - and because of the unprecedented efforts of many Brothers and our K-O Leadership Teams, we have had to scale back a bit and re-double our efforts - to lay the strategic groundwork for our Kappa-Omega Zeta as we move into the 21st century. You might see some "tangibles" these days that could perhaps - mistakenly be misconstrued as a "slide" - but please know - the all-important "intangibles" are at an all-time high in my now several years of experience with K-O, and it is this essence and spirit - which will ensure a great flowering of our Kappa-Omega Zeta for the years to come. As I said yesterday, come down to the Curry House - and see and sense the Brothers of today at work - be it on the great Landscaping project, the new Scholarship offerings, the new Philanthropic programs, the revitalized Devos, the extreme commitment to Recruiting gents of excellence - to name but a few things - and you will know of what I speak [and if you were unable to see the Brothers at SongFest - you missed a real treat - more than hilarious - more than excellent - and more than meaningfully - it truly harkened back to yesteryear - and that for which K-O is so well-known - in my nine years now of attending SongFest - I have never seen a finer offering from the troops].

As always, we need your help, we need your support and we need your prayers. Due to the excellent and ongoing work of Mr. Beams and Mark Lenahan - never before have we had such strong relations with the Alumni Brothers, and please know that each Active Brother and I cherish you, your commitment and your memories. Please know, we shall work to continue this trend of enhanced relations with all of you.

Well, this has rambled on quite long enough. But as I stood on the steps of the Chapel Friday evening before SongFest and looked up - I saw a beautiful crescent moon over our campus. To me the crescent moon [which is omni-present during our most-cherished of times, that of "Ritual"] now and forever will make me think of Lambda Chi Alpha, the Brothers of Kappa-Omega Zeta, and these very, very special times which we are honored and blessed to have. Please know I consider it not a duty - but a true privilege and pleasure to serve our Kappa-Omega Zeta. I shall close now - with words I oft-times use. Thanks for all and everything.

Thessalonians 5, 14-18

"And we exhort you brethren, admonish the idle, encourage the faint-hearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all. Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

Peter LaRue

Brother Lenahan,

Thank you. We have been overwhelmed with responses from brothers all over the globe with stories of sadness and of miracles-each with strong undertones of brotherly love. As promised in a previous e-mail, we wanted to share the status of all our brothers. In that light, we've set up a special Lambda Chi Alpha September 11, 2001, Memorial Web site dedicated to all those directly impacted by the September 11 tragedies. This list is a "work in progress" because we will continually update and make corrections as we continue to receive information about brothers who were affected. You may find the Memorial page by going to www.lambdachi.org and clicking on September 11, 2001, Memorial or go directly to http://www.lambdachi.org/tragedy.asp .

On a side note, we would like to extend the deadline for those of you who wish to submit an entry for the Cross & Crescent essay contest: "What Lambda Chi Alpha Has Meant To Me." The past deadline was October 1, 2001, but it will be extended to November 1, 2001. Submissions may be mailed to:

I would like to ask the Brothers to remember two of my fellow employees' families (from XonTech). They were out of our DC office and were on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. This has been confirmed; their names were Leonard Taylor and John Sammartino. I did not know them personally; however, our company is not that large (less than 500 people) and it just really hits home to us.

Dear Alumni,

In shortly over one month, the active chapter of Kappa-Omega Zeta will be returning to begin the 2001-2002 academic year. Thanks to the outstanding efforts of the 2000-2001 High Zeta led by Mr. Kevin Brown and Peter LaRue, the chapter is poised in anticipation of the coming year's achievements and new ventures. This year's active chapter holds opportunities that few before it have ever held. The chapter is in such a refined state that we are able to explore possibilities once considered unattainable. However, great potential brings with it great responsibility. In times of bountiful potential, one must be mindful to invest his resources wisely. I constantly pray that the decision being made now and the ones in the near future will do nothing but further the advancement of Lambda Chi Alpha.

For this reason much is being done and discussed to ensure that the 2002 Spring Rush will be the most successful recruitment ever. Thanks to the approval of the Executive Committee Dr. LaRue, Brian Mattingly, and myself have overseen the creation and circulation of the William Anthony Beams Scholarship for Leadership and Service. The College has graciously allowed us to obtain the names of the 168 incoming freshmen male students. Currently, our High Delta, Mr. Brian Mattingly, is working on distributing applications to each of these individuals. This scholarship, in the amount of $250 dollars will be funded by the active brothers in the hopes that the ideals of Kappa-Omega will be overwhelmingly known. We at Kappa-Omega are determined to take the vast majority of all quality male students partaking in Spring Rush. In is our responsibility to ensure that the legacy of Kappa-Omega is preserved by those who are worthy of such an honor. And speaking for the High Zeta, we commit to you that we will not fail in this endeavor. We are determined; and we will succeed.

Another very important item on our 2001-2002 agenda is to ensure that each of you are as informed and involved as possible. In case you are unaware, the active brotherhood cares tremendously about our alumni relations and is hopeful that this year will only strengthen the bond of our brotherhood. Your lives are permanently a part of each of us, for we realize that we would not be part of such an incredible brotherhood had it not been for each of you. You have entrusted us with the Legacy of Kappa-Omega, and we want you to be as involved and as passionate as ever.

Also planned is an upgrade on our philanthropic endeavors . Although we provide more services for the Georgetown and surrounding communities than any other fraternity on campus, we are ready to do more. Our High Beta, Mr. Martin Rains, possesses some of the most innovative and organizational skills of any I have seen. The active chapter is very passionate and concerned about our role in the community and is ready to give more than we have ever given. We are determined to increase community involvement and exceed our past totals in participation and financial donations.

And there is so much more. These are only a small portion of the many activities underway at Kappa-Omega. Currently, we need your help on a project scheduled to begin prior to the start of Fall classes. Our chapter is worried about the state of the outside of our house. For quite sometime the outside of the house has been in need of repair and landscaping. We are concerned that the outside of our house, the first impression for many potential members, is not competing well with the other fraternities on campus. It is our hope that enough funds will be raised to improve its condition and provide a very welcoming atmosphere to guests of our house. If enough funds are raised, we may even be able to have the outside professionally sculpted by a local landscape architect that would include a permanent sign advertising our letters and chapter designation. This project cannot proceed without you and please know that any gift is overwhelmingly appreciated.

Checks can be made payable to:
Lambda Chi Alpha
Memo: Landscaping Project

Please send any contributions to:
Lambda Chi Alpha
400 E. College St. #417
Georgetown, KY 40324

Finally, Homecoming will be the weekend of October 19-21. If you have not made plans to return and see your brothers from the past, do so. They were some of the best years of your life, why not relive them? More information will be coming soon. We hope to see each of you there.

There has seldom been a young man who has distinguished himself in such a plethora of venues as has "Hoss-Cat" - and I feel humbled and blessed that he was such an important part of my/our lives for these past four years [and hopefully he will continue to be - he has graduated not "crossed-over" <smile> ]. I figured you might want to know as we celebrate this extraordinary young gent. Be Well.

Brothers,

Was surfing the Chapter Web Page when I realized that we have a few news items that might be print worthy.

I went to graduation last week to see Brother Joe Dan Osceloa receive an Honorary Doctors degree from Georgetown College.

We are planning a reunion in Louisville on November 2-4. Activities include a trip to Churchill Downs, dinner and dance with live music, a trip to the new Caesar's Riverboat and resort and an open brunch at the Galt House Hotel on Sunday. The committee will meet again on July 12th to finalize the plans and begin sending invitations.

On behalf of the Brothers of the Kappa-Omega Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha collectively, and myself personally, it gives me great pleasure to announce the creation of the "William A. Beams Leadership-Service Scholarship". This scholarship is created in honor of the ongoing work and efforts afforded our Zeta by Bill Beams of Wilmore, Kentucky. Mr. Beams has ably served the Georgetown College chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha for many years, and currently serves as President of our Alumni Advisory Board.

The scholarship, in the amount of $250.00, will be awarded annually to an incoming, full-time, residential freshman male at the beginning of the fall semester. Applicants will submit to the Executive Committee of Kappa-Omega Zeta, a resume and brief biographical sketch. Preference will be given to applicants who are exemplars of academic excellence, leadership skills, spiritual
values and strong involvement in wide and varied activities.

The "William A. Beams Leadership-Service Scholarship" was created by the Executive Committee of our Kappa-Omega Zeta this past Monday, and given approval by the full Brotherhood at our General Meeting. The Brothers were pleased to announce this new scholarship on April 30, 2001, when Mr. Beams was present.

The scholarship is designed to enhance a young man's first impressions of Georgetown College collectively and the Greek System in general. In no manner or fashion will it be viewed as a "recruiting device" for future Brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha.

To this end, I am requesting on behalf of our Brotherhood, the opportunity to obtain from the Admissions Office, the names and home addresses of incoming, full-time, residential male students. As we are cognizant that the recruiting season goes well into the summer months, we would not need this information prior to the middle of July. Our High Delta, Mr. Brian Mattingly, upon receipt of this information, would design a letter explaining the scholarship and application procedure, as well as briefly indicating the many, well-known positives associated with Greek Life at Georgetown College. Please let me know if there is anything else which I might do to facilitate this request.

Again, we are very excited about this new scholarship opportunity, and consider it a privilege and pleasure to honor a valued alumnus, such as Mr. Beams, in this fashion.

Most Warmly,
Pete LaRue

Brothers,

I am writing one last time to express my gratitude for your support and encouragement over the past four years. It does not seem possible that it has been that long since I served as Alumni Secretary. I hope that you can sense an increased effort to improve our alumni relations and I trust that we can make this bond even stronger. Soon, I too, will be an alumnus and I will be joining you in supporting a group of guys that is second to none.

I don't know what you were feeling when you were two weeks away from graduating. I have had moments of extreme joy, but I have also been overwhelmed with tears thinking about all that I am leaving behind. Last week I was reminded of the extreme efforts of our brotherhood at the Fourth Annual Greek Recognition Banquet. We received the following honors:

Advisor of the Year: Dr. Peter LaRue
Man of the Year: Kevin Brown
Scholar of the Year: Joey Coleman
Athlete of the Year: Jamie Johnson
Campus Involvement
Community Service Cup
Scholarship Cup
President's Cup

I am beginning to notice all of the things that we take for granted every day; awards, formals, Homecomings, parties, Ritual, meetings, late night talks, and stupid jokes from the back of the room. As much as I will miss all of the things that make us what we are, I know that it is my time to move on and support the brotherhood from a different perspective.

I challenge you to join me in supporting the active chapter now and for many years to come. Thank you for entrusting me with the legacy of your brotherhood. I have given the reins over to someone I know will be successful. Look forward to seeing and hearing good things from our new High Alpha Michael Birchett, High Rho David McConda, and the remainder of the 2001-2002 Leadership Team. Thanks again for a wonderful four years. I remain most respectfully yours...

In Z.A.X.,

Dear Brothers,

At the outset, please extend my personal thanks and thanks on behalf of young Martin and the entire Rains family, for the out-pouring of prayers, goodwill, and good wishes which you have extended for and towards him. It has meant more to this young gent than you may possibly imagine, and although it represents troubling circumstance, I have been both gratified by - and humbled by - your support for this Brother and our Brotherhood in this time of need. The literal and figurative "mobilization" of Kappa-Omega at this time has been awe-inspiring.

On Thursday, the doctors performed what is being billed as a "surgical biopsy" on Martin as they continue to try to unravel the mystery of his condition. I know from discussions with his Mother, that tissue/samples were taken from the pericardium, pericardial fluid, and the heart muscle [please forgive me you "real doctor" types - I might not have gotten the terminology/nomenclature quite right - but it is something like that]. The doctors are hoping - from these samples - to get a better picture on what might be causing his condition.

There is a chance that Martin might leave the hospital as early as this weekend [or as soon as he recovers from the biopsy procedure], however, the big concern remains - they seemingly have not a clue of what is actually causing the problem.

I thank-you for your thoughts and prayers for Martin - and hope that you will continue in a similar fashion. I will try to keep you abreast of any news/changes in his condition.

Most Warmly,
Pete LaRue

PS: This weekend the Brothers are having their annual "Hot-Tub-A-Thon" with our good friends from Sigma Kappa. The proceeds from this popular philanthropic project will go to the local chapter of cystic fibrosis. Brother Adam Poff has been the Coordinator for this year's HTAT, and has done a great job for the project. Last evening the fine gents from 105.5 FM in Lexington spent a few hours down at the house - transmitting live from the HTAT - which has brought unusually good press for Kappa-Omega, Lambda Chi Alpha and Georgetown College. The HTAT concludes this evening at 6:00 PM.

Dear Active & Alumni Brothers of Kappa-Omega Zeta,

I have a favor to ask. In your thoughts and prayers over the next few days, will you please remember our Brother, Martin Rains. As all Active Brothers know, as well as many of you Alumni Brothers, Martin is a sophomore, pre-med major from Paducah. He currently serves our Brotherhood as High Delta and is also a valued member of the college soccer team.

For several weeks, Martin has been fighting a condition which seemingly affects his heart - and by extension his entire body. He has been in and out of the hospital several times over the past few months. He spent the entire week prior to Spring Break at Central Baptist in Lexington, was able to go home during break, and since returning, has again been at Central Baptist.

His condition seemingly perplexes all of the attending physicians. Currently, he is being seen by a team of cardiologists, another team of immunologists, as well as several other specialists. And no offense to our many Brothers involved in the medical profession, but Martin's doctors can seemingly come to no conclusion - other than he is very, very sick - and this is an obvious
source of great concern to all.

I visited with Martin and his Mother this afternoon, and he is exceedingly appreciative of the many kindnesses being shown him by Adam, all Brothers, the gents of the soccer team and many other members of our Georgetown College campus community.

I most humbly ask for your prayers on behalf of our young friend Martin. Please know I do not make this request lightly. The uncertainty of Martin's health, the baffling nature of his recurring condition, the despair always associated with the unknown - all prompt me to make this request.

As mentioned, Martin is at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. His room number is 4202 and telephone is 859-260-4202. Please know a Brother needs you now.

Most Warmly,
Peter LaRue

The following announcement is from Georgetown College:

Georgetown College alumni will no longer have to look very far to find an old friend, reminisce about the "good old days," or find out what their classmates are now up to. The Georgetown College Alumni Association's new web site was launched today.  The site, found at http://www.georgetowncollege.edu/alumni, features updated alumni news, class notes, homecoming, alumni events information, an on-line version of "Insights" (Georgetown College's alumni magazine), online shopping at The Store at Georgetown College, and information about the benefits of the GC Alumni Association. "The best part of the site is the nostalgia it produces for the viewer, "said Alumni Association Executive Director Logan Hillyard. "We made an effort to have something there for every alum, and I believe everyone who visits the site will be pleasantly surprised. We hope alumni of the College will start to use the site to keep track of their friends, stay in touch and involved with the Association, and even send in pictures and updates about themselves for our class notes and featured sections. "The Georgetown College Alumni Association is the official organization of the alumni of Georgetown College. Membership in the Association is open to all alumni, former students, and honorary degree holders of the College, or any institution having merged into the College. The Association can be reached at (502) 863-8050, toll-free at (877) 640-0107, or via e-mail at alumni_association@georgetowncollege.edu

Dearest Brothers of Kappa-Omega: NIBS, Initiates and Valued Alumni,

Well gosh, although upon occasion I share assorted thoughts with varying "wings" of our Kappa-Omega operation - I thought in this one case - I might send the same brief, but rambling e-communique to everyone. Might be a plan. Grrr...

What a special privilege and pleasure it was to again be a part of our Kappa-Omega Brotherhood this past weekend, as we welcomed into the "inner circle" our eleven, new and highly-cherished "NIBS". During the weekend, I was reminded of the extraordinary power, profound meaning and sheer beauty of our Lambda Chi Alpha Ritual. Special thanks to Mr. Oakes [High Phi], Mr. Johnson [High Kappa], Mr. Brown [High Alpha] and the entire Brotherhood for ensuring the great success of "I" Week in general and Ritual in particular. Special thanks to several Alumni Brothers for giving of your time to be with us over the weekend. And a special commendation to our good friend, Mr. Bill Beams, for being with us - for the duration [and dodging some most inexplicable flying objects - upon occasion]. Thanks to everyone and all.

Among our Alumni Brothers, my sharing of the great Tolkien quotation of a week or so ago - might have raised a few eyebrows. Please - All Brothers - read and/or read again, and reflect upon the wisdom of these fine words. I offer it not to obsfucate - but to clarify.....

"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by frost."

As I am on a "sharing" kick - there follows a "mantra" [ok - that is probably not the correct word in this particular application] which I have posted in each place I might find myself during the course of each day. I am surely not saying that these thirteen "bits" [I could say "orts" here to help recover from the previous mis-usage of mantra] of wisdom are a panacea for all things - but they surely help keep me on the relatively [marginally] "S&N" [aka Straight and Narrow]. Much of my ongoing "higher road/lower road" mumblings [well, that sounds a tad negative - but I hated to saying "preachings" for obvious reasons] are based upon the great wisdom of General Powell. If you have never seen/read/heard them, I hope you will. If you are revisiting the "TPOO" I hope you will find something new upon which to grasp.....

The "13 Principles of Operation"
General Colin Powell [ret.], Secretary of State

01. It ain't as bad as you think, it will look better in the morning
02. Get mad, then get over it
03. Avoid having your ego so close to your position that, when your position falls, your ego goes with it
04. It can be done
05. Be careful what you choose, you may get it
06. Don't let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision
07. You can't make someone else's choices; you shouldn't let someone else make yours
08. Check small things
09. Share credit
10. Remain calm, be kind
11. Have a vision; be demanding
12. Don't take counsel of your fears or naysayers
13. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier

Well this little e-epistle was meant [originally] to just say hello to all, send thanks to all, and to hopefully remind each of us what a great privilege it is - to be a Brother of Kappa-Omega. Oh heck [or other expletive of choice] yes, we have daily challenges at the Ralph L. Curry House. Oh heck [or other expletive of choice] yes, we sometimes make choices for the better - sometimes for the worse. Oh heck [or other expletive of choice] yes, sometimes the frustrations involved with just "keeping the boat afloat" are overwhelming. But please know, everyone - in their own way - be they past, present or future Brothers contribute to Kappa-Omega - and we celebrate these contributions.

To the NIBS: Welcome Aboard!!! To our Initiated Brothers: Thanks for everything. Have Good & Safe Spring Breaks!!! To our Valued Alumni: Even though many miles or many years might separate us, you are with us always.

And I would like to close with the Bible Verse which I read daily, mention often and have shared previously. I hope that it might bring you the strength of Spirit and hope for Light which it does for me.

Most Warmly,
Peter LaRue

Brothers,

It has been some time since I last received the opportunity to formally address all of you. We are currently making final preparations for the most anticipated week of the year, I-Week. It hardly seems possible that it is time once again to initiate another class of fine young men. If you have not heard by now, we were very pleased to welcome 11 new Associates on January 26. Each of our Associates has displayed a strong work ethic and eagerness to learn, qualities that will greatly benefit our brotherhood now and in the future. Although our number of Associates is somewhat lower than it has been in the past, I can assure you that Kappa-Omega has never been in better shape. It seems as though we sometimes measure success in numbers and/or awards, but this should not be the case.

Over the past few weeks, I have heard that some of you are concerned about the state of the chapter. If you are concerned about what is happening at Kappa-Omega, I invite you to write me with your concerns. I would be glad to ease your worries. Did we get the largest pledge class? No. Do we have the best parties? Probably not. Do we always abide by every rule? Certainly not. But.... Do we have the highest fraternal GPA on campus? Yes. Are we the most philanthropic fraternity on campus? You bet. Are we the most dedicated and involved men on campus? By far.

I say all of this to make a distinct point. For years I have heard brothers before me say, "We're the best." I have heard it so many times that I have grown tired of hearing it. Rarely has anyone stopped to really measure what it means to be the best. To me, being the best means recognizing your strengths while humbling yourself with your weaknesses. Once those weaknesses are recognized, only the best will overcome them. Every year we discover weaknesses, and every year we overcome them. I will be honest, we have discovered some weaknesses this year and we have overcome them. In my opinion, if you can't find something to improve upon, then you aren't doing your job.

The brothers of Kappa-Omega take the legacy of our brotherhood very seriously. We work to ensure that young men that will be here long after we are gone can be afforded the same experience from which we have all greatly benefited. As my senior year draws to a close I can't help but look back upon the last four years of my life and thank God that I have no regrets. Lambda Chi Alpha has taught me so many things about myself, lessons that every young man needs to learn. I would hope that you could say that it was Lambda Chi that made Georgetown College a home for you. It has been a home for me, a home that I would never put in harm's way, a home that I would protect and defend, and most importantly, a home that I know is in good hands after I am gone. Please know that your home is in good hands. Know that your legacy is lived every day and that you are not forgotten.

We are having Ritual this weekend, March 2-3. I would be honored if you could come and experience the work of our Ritualist, Stephen Oakes and our Fraternity Educator, Jamie Johnson as our brotherhood continues to grow and prosper. Until we meet again, I remain most respectfully yours...

In Z.A.X.,
Kevin W. Brown

Dear Good and Faithful Alumni Brothers of our Kappa-Omega Zeta,

The e-communique recently sent to you by our High Alpha, the responses which I am sure it most predictably elicited and a few other events of late, prompt me to share the words of J. R. R. Tolkien with you. Although I am tempted to say more - I shan't - as Mr. Tolkien says it best.....

Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by frost."
